FAQ: Problems Installing LEADTOOLS
Reply Quote

Problem:

Upon installing LEADTOOLS, the modify/remove dialog appears when LEADTOOLS really is not installed. If you choose to remove, it says that it removed it but the same dialog appears when you try to install again.

Solution:

You had LEADTOOLS installed at some point but when you uninstalled it, it did not remove all of the necessary information for some reason. To solve this problem, do the following:

1) Remove the target folder where the setup was installed:
    Ex. "c:\program files\lead technologies, inc\leadtools

2) Delete the start menu program group (the shortcuts)

3) Delete the folder from the directory below. Please keep in mind that this is a hidden directory. You will need to 'show hidden directories' in the folder options.
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information that corresponds to the toolkit/setup that you want removed.
Ex: {35288E82-F8F1-4B94-B00B-8107121D18D9} is for LEADTOOLS 14.5 Release

4) Run regedit and delete the item from:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
that corresponds to the toolkit/setup that you want removed.
Ex: {35288E82-F8F1-4B94-B00B-8107121D18D9} is for LEADTOOLS 14.5 Release

Another option is to download the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from Microsoft. It's a little safer than trying to delete everything manually. Not to mention, you can use it for any failed windows installer installation as opposed to just leadtools 14.5. (For those developers who can't read between the lines, that means your failed installations too.)

BTW: When Windows Installer fails to uninstall an app properly, you're out of luck. You can't transfer files because windows thinks they are already there and you can't uninstall because windows doesn't have enough info about your app to uninstall it. Of course, there are a number of failures can leave windows thinking you're installed when you actually aren't. Thankfully, they are very infrequent and they will rear their ugly heads as a big error during installation. If you end up in ths state without any errors, it's generally because the drive is heavily fragmented. Save yourself a headache and defrag before trying to fix fix or reinstall anything. If you don't you'll probably run into the same problem. Regardless of the cause, this utility deletes the app directly from the windows installer database, allowing you to perform a clean install no matter what.
