Windows Explorer crashes in Windows Vista when browsing MPEG2 files

Symptom:

When browsing directories which contain some MPEG2 files on Windows Vista Service Pack 1, Windows explorer will crash and display the error "Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working". A screenshot of the exact error is also attached below.

Reason:

When browsing video files in Windows explorer, windows will attempt to generate a thumbnail of the video. To do this, it searches the computer for a decoder capable of decompressing the video format. In some cases, the decoder will have an issue decompressing the video file and cause the error. This is a known issue with the Microsoft MPEG2 Decoder as well as some other MPEG2 Decoders installed by various applications.

Resolution:

The LEADTOOLS MPEG2 Video Decoder is capable of decompressing all MPEG2 files and does not crash when decompressing the same MPEG2 files which cause other decoders to crash. In all tested cases where the above symptom has occurred, installing the LEADTOOLS MPEG2 Video Decoder solved the problem.

More information on the LEADTOOLS MPEG2 Video Decoder and an evaluation version can be found found at the below links.
