There is a widespread myth which claims that out of all barcode engines, the one that reads the smallest barcode symbol is best. This assertion is certainly not based on a sound knowledge of engineering principles; it is simply false and should be abandoned. It should be accepted that there is no value in reading only a few symbols, which may be too small and therefore outside specifications, and to use such a random result as a basis for an evaluation.
To evaluate the performance of a barcode recognition engine, it is necessary to process a large number of images. It is important that all test images are within specifications in regards to minimum barcode symbol size and other parameters.
